Step 1. Cable Cutting and Bundling, Parts Insertion, Terminal Process Description Based-on customer requirement, measure the specified length of optical fibre cable using calibrated ruler and cut accordingly. The cables are then wind with a rotating wheel and tie with a piece of twist tie. Insert the plug components as per the numbers of insertion order. During the terminal process, the following must be checked: i All specified sizes or dimensions are correct ii Using tools as instructed iii. Cut the excessive Kevlar iv. Ensure no primary coating remains in the process of fiber cleaning v. Ensure no crack on the fiber Step 2. Selection of Ferulle, Adhesion of Ferrule, Adhesive Hardening Description Due to the fiber variations (125 mm, 126 mm and 127 mm), selection of ferrule is very important to ensure that the fiber can be inserted into the hole of ferrule in good fit. After the selection of appropriate ferrule, epoxy (Epotek 353ND) is applied to the hole of ferrule before inserting the fiber. For SC or FC type of connectors, ferrule heated is used to cure the adhesive (epoxy) used in the assembly of the optical fiber connectors, whereas, for Simple SC (SSC) type of connectors, oven (GZ-ESPEC) is used for this purpose. Step 3. Ferrule Endface Polishing Description In OCE, OFL-12 mass production polishing machine (Seiko Instruments) are used to polish various types of connectors due to easy handling of the control which in turn allow for optimum connector endface results. The OFL-12 mass production output of connectors and/or ferrules, and up to 16 connectors (modified by OCE to achieve this quantity) can be polished simultaneously. Offering mass production polishing without the need of periodic recalibration, it is ideal for high-speed analogue and digital telecommunications needs where ultra-low loss and reflectivity are essential. Step 4. Ferrule Endface Inspection Description The finish of a polished connector's endface determines the quality of its lightwave transmission. Thus, a high power Nikon Microscope is used to physically inspects the endface quality to ensure that the endface is within the customer requirements. Step 5. Interferometer Measurement Description The most critical factor in producing connectors, which meet the highest possible specifications, is the quality of the connector ferrule endface geometry. Physical contact, fiber core alignment and termination reliability are greatly effected by the ferrule radius of curvature, ferrule apex offset and fiber height. In order to maintain this quality, OCE purchases its ferrule from Japan. In OCE, a high magnification Zoom Interferometer (ZX-1) is used to measure the following parameters: i Ferrule radius of curvature: 10 mm £ R ³ 25mm ii Ferrule apex offset: £ 50 mm iii. Ferrule height: -50 nm £ H ³ 100nm In doing so, a quality connector ferrule endface is assured before the further termination is done. Step 6. Tentative Loss and Return Loss Measurement, Ferrule Endface Inspection Description All connectors produced by OCE are further tested using Power Meters (JDS Fitel or JDS Uniphase) for the following parameters: i Tentative loss ii Return loss a) Physical Contact (PC): ³ -45 dB b) Advanced Physical Contact (AdPC):³ -40 dB c) Super Physical Contact (SPC):³ -45 dB d) Ultra Physical Contact (UPC):³ -55 dB e) Angle Physical Contact (APC):³ -65 dB In doing so, a quality connector ferrule endface is assured before the further termination is done. Step 7. Housing Assembly Description OCE offers high performance and simple assembly fiber optic connectors - for easy termination or as part of standard and custom cable assemblies. Connectors are attached to the ends of individual fibers in cable assemblies to allow for the transfer of light from another fiber. Step 8. Insertion Loss Measurement, Ferrule Endface Inspection Description After housing assembly process, the connectors must be tested using Power Meters (JDS Fitel or JDS Uniphase) for Insertion Loss (< 0.3 dB). Then, the connectors will be sent for final endface inspection prior to packing. All OCE products meet the International Standard specifications and test data can be provided in test reports of certificates on the customer's request. The normal test data provided are the Insertion Loss (IL) and Return Loss (RL (> 50 dB)). Step 9. Packing Description The finished products are housed in zipper plastic bags and packed in quality corrugated carton boxes. The boxes are labeled according to the customer's requirements and sent out to the destination by air. OCE ensures that the products reach the destination in good condition and ready for putting into use. Whatever the application the OCE will make certain out products, whether standard or custom, are delivered on time and to your required specifications.
